Tús

Tús is a community work placement scheme providing short-term working opportunities for unemployed people throughout Ireland. The work done benefits the community and are provided by not-for-profit community and voluntary organisations.

Since 2011 Southside Partnership DLR has managed up to 14 Tús teams in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown. In 2018 alone over 200 local unemployed people participated on this community work placement initiative which helped them to update their CVs, gain new skills and break some of the bad habits and patterns associated with exposure to long-term unemployment.

As well as running some work specific teams such as our Care & Repair and Computer Training teams, in partnership with Age Action Ireland, we also have up to 100 active community and voluntary groups within the county hosting Tús participants and benefiting from their hard work and commitment. There are a wide variety of placements available for those participating on the programme including, caretaking, administration, gardening, childcare, project work, tidy towns operative, mini-bus drivers and reception to name but a few.

Unemployed people who are eligible to participate in the scheme are selected and contacted by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection who then put them forward for placement. A limited number of places can also be filled through ‘self-selection’ by unemployed people who are eligible and interested in specific local positions.

Southside Partnership DLR - Digital Skills Training

The Southside Partnership Tús IT Team has been delivering a Digital Skills programme in DLR for a number of years. In 2018, we have trained over 950 people. In total, over 6,650 hours of IT tutoring was provided by our team of twenty five specialised tutors.

Tutors are drawn from the Tús Programme and all have knowledge and experience of IT. An extensive ongoing in-work training programme is offered to our tutors over a one year period.

Southside Partnership Tús IT training operates in eleven different centres across Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown. The youngest learner is six years old (Code Academy) and our oldest learner is ninety two!

One To One Training

For clients with disabilities, one-to-one training is offered and tailored to their specific needs.

The advantages students have with a one-to-one tutor are that their specific needs and weaknesses can be addressed more consistently and fully without having to compete with other students for attention. Also, there are less time constraints, so they can go at their own pace and not feel pressured by the progress of other students.

The subjects covered are as follows:

  • Computer, Smartphone and Tablet basics
  • Using the internet and emails
  • Managing files and folders
  • Working with photos on laptop, phone or tablet
  • Using Facebook, Twitter, Skype, You Tube
  • Using apps on phone and tablets
  • Computer slow or not working
  • Writing letters, documents and spreadsheets
  • Internet security, use of antivirus
  • Phone not working properly
