The Healthy Food Made Easy (HFME) Programme is a basic nutrition and cookery course that helps people to change to a healthy diet, plan meals on a budget and makes it easier to cook tasty nutritious meals. It is funded and supported by the HSE, with the content all based on Department of Health guidelines on healthy eating.
Our programme consists of two types of courses
Healthy Food Made Easy for anyone aged 14years onwards and is run over a 6-week period and are designed to be fun and are informative, with no prior cooking experience required.
Cool Dude is for anyone aged 10 to 14 years and is run over a 5-week period and is designed to be fun and informative, and everyone get involved.
The courses run once a week for 2.5 hours over a 6 week period. We run both open courses (open to everyone) and courses for specific groups.
The topics that may be covered include:
- The Healthy Foody Pyramid
- Fibre in our Diet
- Fats in Foods
- Supermarket Know-How and shopping smart (reading labels etc.)
- Shopping on a budget
- Behaviour change
- Practical cooking experience
- Discussion with HSE Community Dietician
At each session, participants will be invited to participate in cooking/preparing food and will then sit down to eat together at the end.
All ingredients and utensils are provided.
- Understand the different nutrients in food and their importance
- Know how to read food labels when shopping
- Learn to shop on a budget
- Cooking skills to include simple, tasty and nutritious meals
- Get a handbook at the end with useful information and recipes from the course
There are two ways of participating in a course.
- If you’re part of a group (e.g. health, social or community group) you can contact our co-ordinator Angie Lennon to enquire about a group booking. The group needs to be based within the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown county
- If you’re an individual living in the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown county – you can participate in an open course, which currently run an ongoing basis in Dun Laoghaire Scouts Den. You need to book a place in advance through contact the Healthy Food Made Easy Co-ordinator Angie Lennon.
